The two rules a listing image is refused under
Shopify published requirements 4.4.4 and 4.4.5 on 12 March 2026 and began enforcing them on 26 March 2026. Both are about what your images show rather than how large they are. The wording below is quoted; the paragraph under each is what it means in practice.
4.4.4 · What a screenshot has to show
Images should primarily show your app's actual user interface and features. Screenshots must not include desktop backgrounds or browser windows.
Feature images and screenshots that solely contain your app logo are not permitted.
The image is about the app, not around it. A screen photographed inside a browser chrome, a desktop wallpaper behind a floating window, or a slide that is only your logo on a colour are all refused under this one.
4.4.5 · Every image has to be a different one
Each image in your app listing must be unique. Screenshots should showcase different features, views, or states of your app.
Don't submit duplicate or near-identical images.
Six crops of one screen are one image submitted six times. Each has to carry a feature, a view or a state the others do not.
What did not change
The sizes. Desktop screenshots are still 1600 by 900 pixels and a listing still needs at least three of them. If you are here for the numbers rather than the rules, they are on the sizes page.
Where this page stops
Shopify does not define near-identical, and no number for it exists in the documentation. Anyone who gives you a percentage is guessing. The sentence that does the work is the one beside it: each image showcases a different feature, view or state.
Questions
- When did this start?
- Shopify published the two requirements on 12 March 2026 and began enforcing them on 26 March 2026. A listing reviewed after that date is reviewed against them.
- Do the sizes change?
- No. The changelog is about what images show and whether they repeat each other. Desktop screenshots stay 1600 by 900.
- Does this apply to a listing that is already live?
- Shopify enforces requirements at review. A listing that is not resubmitted is not re-reviewed for this on its own, but any later update is.
- What counts as near-identical?
- Shopify does not define it, and this page will not invent a threshold. The safe reading is the sentence beside it: each image showcases a different feature, view or state.
- Can my logo appear at all?
- Yes, where it is genuinely part of the interface being shown. What is refused is an image whose only content is the logo.
- How many screenshots do I need?
- At least three desktop screenshots at 1600 by 900. Most listings show six, which is also the number a full set on this site contains.
Where this comes from
- Clearer standards for app listing images - the changelog entry of 12 March 2026, which both quotes above are taken from.
- Shopify App Store requirements - the requirement list the two numbers belong to.
A set drawn here is six images, each carrying a different feature of your app, at 1600 × 900. That is 4.4.5 by construction rather than by luck. €49 once. See a set
