Shopify App Store image sizes
Three assets, two sizes. Everything below is quoted from Shopify's own developer documentation, and the pages it comes from are linked at the bottom. Where Shopify does not state a value, this page says so instead of filling the gap.
The sizes
| Asset | Size | Format | How many |
|---|---|---|---|
| App icon | 1200 × 1200 px | JPEG or PNG | One |
| Feature media | 1600 × 900 px (16:9) | A static image, or a video of two to three minutes | One |
| Desktop screenshots | 1600 × 900 px (16:9) | Not stated by Shopify | Three to six |
So a full listing is at most seven images: one icon, one feature image, and six screenshots. The feature image and the screenshots are the same shape, which is why a set is usually drawn as one batch.
What gets an image rejected
- A screenshot with the browser window or your desktop in it.
- An image that is only your logo, whether it is the feature image or a screenshot.
- Two images that are the same or nearly the same. Every image in the listing has to be different.
- A price anywhere in an image, including inside the app icon.
- Shopify's own trademarks in your app icon.
The rule underneath all of them is that the images have to show the app doing its job. Shopify asks for the actual interface, not a poster about it.
What Shopify does not state
- A file size limit, for any of the three.
- A file format for the screenshots. Only the icon is specified, as JPEG or PNG.
If you find a guide that gives you a maximum file size in megabytes, it is not quoting Shopify. Export PNG at 1600 by 900 and you are inside every limit anyone has run into.
One thing that is not in the specification
A merchant reads the images before the description. The size is the easy part: any exporter hits 1600 by 900. What decides whether they install is whether the first image says what the app does in a line they can read at thumbnail size, and whether the six of them tell one story instead of six.
Questions
- What size are Shopify app listing images?
- Screenshots and the feature image are both 1600 by 900 pixels, a 16:9 rectangle. The app icon is separate and square, at 1200 by 1200 pixels.
- How many screenshots does a Shopify app listing take?
- Between three and six desktop screenshots, plus one feature image or video. Six screenshots is the maximum, so a full listing carries seven images at most.
- What is the Shopify app feature image size?
- The same 1600 by 900 pixels as the screenshots. You can use a video of two to three minutes in that slot instead.
- What size is a Shopify app icon?
- 1200 by 1200 pixels, in JPEG or PNG. It is the one asset Shopify states a file format for.
- Can I use the same image twice in a listing?
- No. Shopify requires every image in a listing to be unique, and screenshots to show different features, views or states.
- Can I show pricing in a listing image?
- No. Pricing is not allowed anywhere in the images, and that includes the app icon.
